Chapter 13

Sophie

I could hear the soft sound of his breathing even before I opened my eyes. How long had it been since I had woken up with someone in my bed? Two years, maybe more? I glanced at the clock on the dresser. 10:45. Twisting a little to look at Fitz, I noted the searing pain in my side had dulled down to an achy burn. Good. Things were healing.

He looked like the Fitz I had known a century ago and yet here in a moment of just being able to stare, I cataloged some of the differences. More generous lips, hair longer than 1909 Fitz would ever have worn it, much more muscle. 1909 Fitz was reasonably fit for a twenty-five-year-old of his age and social standing, but it would never have occurred to him to lift weights. I also suspected, that as confused and doubting as this Fitz was, he was far more intelligent and analytical than the original. I decided I appreciated that now, an extra hundred years of knowledge and experience had changed me… well, in an intellectual and emotional way anyway.

If the only problem at hand had been how much of my attraction was real and not just based on his appearance and lineage, that would have been great. But he was in danger, and I wasn’t sure what part was due to his attempt to sell the vase attracting the attention of the wrong people and how much was due to my presence. I’d spent most of my lifetime living under the radar, accruing knowledge and money.

Would I go back to being mortal given the option? Damn, that was a hard question. To avoid dwelling on that for the moment, I hauled myself out of bed and shuffled off to the bathroom.

I returned to the bedroom. I gingerly sat on the bed, trying not to jolt my body.

Fitz opened his eyes and looked up at me. “Do I smell coffee?”

“It’ll be ready soon.”

He pushed himself upright and ran his fingers through his curly hair. It was a tousled mess and I thought it was gorgeous. He also had a noticeable level of beard stubble.

“If you got up and made coffee, does that mean you’re healed?” He asked.

“Partially. I’m still moving pretty slow.” I grunted and pushed myself back to lean on the headboard. I stretched my legs out in front of me.

Fitz touched a finger to my thigh along the edge of the long sinuous tail of my dragon. He traced the curve of the ink, across the front of my leg and then around my calf to my ankle. “Have you ever tried to remove it? The tattoo I mean.”

“Once, in a fit of despair, I cut a hunk of flesh out. My body healed, restoring the image along with my skin and muscle.”

“So why a dragon? Why not a tiger or some other predatory animal?”

“I don’t know. It just seems to be part of the magic.”
